It's a musical walking tour of Katong!
Katong Dreaming is more than a tour around Katong, and more than an insight into oft-mentioned aspects of Peranakan culture. We deconstruct the popular opinion about what it means to be Peranakan, and by extension, what culture really is, and what being “Singaporean” truly means. Perhaps one might be surprised by what you hear. We won’t divulge, come for the tour to find out for yourselves! You’ll get to walk through parts of Katong that you won’t normally see, nor find in tourist books. We’ll take participants through the back lanes, behind the pretty facades, to see the real Katong, not just the pretty facades and gentrified sections of the locale. You’ll be surprised that a portion of the street can become a stage for a performance, against the backdrop of structures rich in history. And there’s a kind of magic and mystery at dusk – scenes that one doesn’t normally find on material promoting Katong. This performing art tour is replete with live singing, dancing, poetry recital, with original music piped in high quality through the innovative use of silent disco headsets. You’ll also get to encounter a unique form of poetry, invented by a Singaporean (Singapore poet Yeow Kai Chai, who devised it in 2010, so it’s quite recent still). It’s called “Twin Cinema”; it consists of two columns, and you can read it horizontally across columns, or vertically, column by column, or even diagonally. It’s very Singaporean, because it is conscious of space, while succinct and efficient at the same time.
