Hands-on Hmong indigo dyeing, village trek & local meal in Hau Thao.
Step into the world of the Black Hmong people with this hands-on cultural experience in Hau Thao Village. Unlike just passing through on a trek, this experience lets you truly connect with the Hmong way of life—learning their traditional craft of indigo dyeing and cloth-making alongside the local community. Indigo dyeing is central to Hmong culture, passed down through generations as a way of preserving their identity. It’s a slow and intricate process, involving natural plant-based dyes, handwoven hemp fabric, and delicate batik patterns created with beeswax. Every piece tells a story, connecting the wearer to their heritage. By trying it yourself, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into Hmong textiles—far beyond what you see in markets. Perfect for those who love immersive experiences and want to go beyond sightseeing, this is a chance to appreciate the artistry behind Hmong textiles, help prepare a family meal, and gain a deeper understanding of this unique culture. You’ll be exploring the village with a knowledgeable Hmong guide who will share stories and insights about their traditions, daily life, and the stunning surroundings. This is more than a craft workshop—it’s a shared experience with a welcoming Hmong family that gives you a glimpse into their world. Meet your host
Zizi and Lilly started their homestay in 2016, creating a welcoming place for travellers while also supporting their local community. Zizi’s family once relied on rice farming, but tourism helped improve their lives, allowing them to upgrade from bamboo to wooden houses. Their journey hasn’t been easy—during COVID, they lost both their business and home to a fire. But through determination and the support of visitors, they rebuilt step by step. Today, their homestay is one of the most loved in Sapa. They hire local guides and run their place as a social enterprise, giving others in the community a chance at a better life.
