Be a conservation diver in Bali, restore coral reefs & dive twice daily 🌊🤿
Join this 1 Week's Coral Reef Restoration Program in Tianyar, Bali, and become a conservation diver. Contribute to restoring the coral reef while diving twice a day at different restoration sites. Work with local community members to deploy artificial reefs, survey coral and fish communities, and develop ID skills as a team. Your research data will make a real impact, shared with local authorities and researchers. As part of the program, you'll build personalized artificial reef structures and position them in the restoration zone. Certified PADI Open Water Divers can participate in weekly deployment dives. If you're not certified, you can learn diving and get PADI certified at an additional cost. Our ongoing artificial reef project, in partnership with local fishermen, creates sustainable jobs and alternative incomes, reducing reliance on sea resource extraction. We prioritize diverse artificial reef units for optimal marine species habitats. To date, we've deployed over 7000 artificial reef structures. The artificial reef we're building bridges gaps between fragmented natural reefs in Tianyar, reconnecting isolated marine life populations. These structures foster coral growth, offer egg-laying habitats for reef fish, and protect marine biodiversityWhat to ExpectArrival and Orientation: Check into your accommodation, meet program coordinators and fellow conservation divers, attend an orientation sessionArtificial Reef Deployment Dives: Deploy reef structures, rest and prepare for the second dive, survey coral and fish communities, participate in debriefing sessionsSecond Artificial Reef Deployment Dives: Repeat the process at a different restoration site, engage in coral and fish identification skill development activitiesFinal Day of Reef Restoration Program: Embark on the last deployment dive, complete the survey dive, contribute data to the database, and share findingsLeisure and Exploration: Enjoy three days to explore the area, engage in cultural experiences, visit attractions, or dive in other sitesNorth Bali Reef Conservation is a non-profit organization. North Bali Reef Conservation is a Non-Governmental Organisation and coral reef restoration program based in the small fishing village of Tianyar on the North East coast of Bali. Tianyar’s reef has the potential to be a healthy and highly diverse coral reef but is currently in poor condition due to irresponsible and unsustainable actions in the past. Until the 1950s the Tianyar beach was a trading port where ships would anchor on the reef to trade basic goods for fresh food and water. Before, it was also fashionable to harvest coral for it to be crushed into a fine white powder and used in the construction of local homes and infrastructure. More recently, the marine ecosystem is under pressure from plastic pollution choking marine life as well as pressure from a few individuals using unsustainable fishing practices. An urgent need to conserve and restore the reef was identified and in 2017 North Bali Reef Conservation was founded by Ketut. Alongside our aim to restore and conserve Tianyar’s coral reef, we also aim to provide an alternative, sustainable livelihood to the local people.
