See 360 degree views over Bali on its tallest mountain
If you crave a challenge that'll set you apart from the typical volcano-hiking crowd, Mount Agung is calling your name. Forget those crowded trails on Mount Batur – this is Bali's tallest and holiest peak, promising incredible views and serious bragging rights when you get back home. What to expect:This hike demands 8-10 hours, so it's definitely geared towards more adventurous folksYou've got options: start at Pasar Agung Temple for a shorter route, or tackle the longer Besakih Temple route and aim for the true summitStart your hike super early for a breathtaking crater rim sunrise – you'll be looking out over all of Bali! You won't be on your own – get ready for hot drinks, snacks, and the expertise of a local hiking guide. Jero and his team know this mountain like the back of their hand, so you're in good company.Important Note: Weather on Agung can shift fast, so they'll make the final call the day before your hike to make sure it's safe. If it's a no-go, don't worry – you'll get a full refund.Pasar Agung Route (Crater Rim):Difficulty: Still challenging, but the shorter and more manageable of the two routes.Elevation Gain: Approximately 1,200 meters (3,900 feet).Duration: Expect 4 hours up and 4 hours down for a total of around 8 hours.Best For: Hikers who want a good challenge and stunning sunrise views, with less emphasis on reaching the absolute summit.Logistics: You'll need to start around 2:00 AM to catch the sunrise between 6:15 AM and 6:30 AM. Pickup is usually around 11:30 PM for those further south.Besakih Temple Route (Summit):Difficulty: Significantly more demanding, both physically and mentally.Elevation Gain: Approximately 1,900 meters (6,200 feet) to the true summit.Duration: Plan on 5-6 hours to reach the top and another 5 hours to descend, totaling 10-12 hours.Best For: Experienced hikers seeking the ultimate Mount Agung achievement with unparalleled 360-degree views (weather permitting!).Logistics: Start around 11:00 PM, aiming for a pre-sunrise summit between 6:15 AM and 6:30 AM. Expect pickup around 8:30 PM from southern areas.Important Considerations:Fitness: Both routes demand a good level of fitness. The Besakih Temple route, in particular, requires significant stamina.Experience: While not technical in the mountaineering sense, familiarity with challenging hikes is highly recommended for both routes and essential for the Besakih summit push.Guide: Hiring a knowledgeable guide is crucial for safety, route finding, and ensuring you're prepared for the conditions.

Jero grew up farming with his family in the shadow of Mount Batur, but the volcano always called to him. He and his cousins would spend hours exploring its slopes. Now, he shares that love with visitors, leading his team of local experts (some of those same cousins!). This is a story of passion, community, and how tourism can truly uplift local lives.

Hi, I am looking to do the Mt Agung trek in the 1st week of December 2024, is that a good time to do it? Thank you!
D, 31 Aug 2024
Hi D, The first week of December is generally a good time to trek Mt. Agung. The weather can be quite pleasant, though it's always a good idea to be prepared for possible rain as the rainy season starts around this time. If you have any specific concerns or need more information about the trek, feel free to ask!
How many people are generally clubbed? I am a solo traveller but looking to do a group hike.
