Did the Torean route and it blew my mind. I've done hikes in New Zealand and Switzerland and the views here are comparable. Lush valleys, waterfalls, etc I still can't believe I was in Asia. We heard from the locals that the Torean route was created by the earthquake so most people still don't know about it.
Basically the only difference between the Torean route and the others is that after summit, you come down a different way from everyone else. On the Torean route you get an EPIC view of the mountains and valley. As you come down, you eventually walk through the valley with the mountains flanking your sides. Very cool and because it’s so green, I felt like I was in Hawaii (like the islands in the movie Moana!). Need to be careful though because one wrong step and you literally tumble down the mountain…
Bruno, my guide, was awesome – he even massaged my thighs when I had a cramp - total legend! Food was SO good, like a mountain warung. I honestly didn't expect food to be so good up on the mountain. There was a fruit platter with every meal!!
Tips:
- It's tough! Even fit hikers should do the 4-day for a bit more time and to enjoy the views.
- There's a ton of food but you should bring snacks just in case! you'll be grateful for it.
- If it’s raining / bad weather, the guides won’t bring guests through the mountain/valley Torean route because its very slippery and dangerous. So if you're super set on Torean, then avoid rainy season.
- The sleeping arrangements are comfy. There's a tent with foam mat and sleeping bag on top.
