Such an amazing trip! A once in a lifetime experience. The only hiccup was on our checkout morning. We had an early checkout, and were told we would have breakfast before we left. We quickly ate breakfast at the restaurant, so that we wouldn’t be late for our 07:20 checkout. As I was leaving, they presented me with some vegetarian food, which I couldn’t accept as we were running. Then we got to checkout, and the staff had kindly prepared a breakfast package for us. In short, we had 3 breakfasts available to us. An improvement in the communication that occurred between staff at checkout, restaurant staff and us would have spared some food goo to waste.
A tiny complaint. I would not hesitate to recommend this company to any who wished to go to the Kinabatangan River.
Henry, our guide, was brilliant. He and our boat-operator made such a huge effort to find an elephant for us to watch. We really appreciated it.

Combined a 2 night 3 day package at Nature Lodge Kinabatangan with a 2 night stay at Nature Lodge Sepilok, booked through the tour company (Nasalis Larvatus) that owns them. We extended the 3rd day in Kinabatangan to add a visit to the Gomangtong Caves at dusk.
Be warned: you are VERY close to nature staying in the jungle! Coming from city life, it’s a bit of a culture shock being so close to all the insects and wildlife and that in itself is quite the experience. We stayed in a “private chalet” (it’s a wooden shack on stilts...) and the room and shower room/toilet was very basic, but had good air conditioning and plenty of insect screens on all vents and windows. If you are not okay with very basic lodging, then this is not the place for you.
All of the boat tours and guided walks were fantastic. Amero (sp?) was an extremely knowledgable local guide and had an amazing eye for spotting wildlife. Cairo (sp?) who took us to the caves was also excellent. The hotel rents out wellies which are vital if it’s been raining - the mud is up to a foot deep in places. Make sure you take leech socks with you as there are leeches everywhere you walk in the rainforest.
We saw everything on our tours: orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, multiple species of hornbills, crocodiles, silver leaf monkeys, a Storm’s stork, eagles... it was incredible.
The staff were fantastic - super friendly and helpful. I had a horrible stomach virus during my stay and they took great care looking out for me and preparing fruit outside of meal times for me. They let us stay in one of the empty dorm rooms after check-out time on our last day while we waited for our transfer to Gomantong.

Helpful Questions from Our Community
Will I definitely see Elephants and Orangutans?
No, we're afraid not. Kinabatangan River is one of the best places to see wildlife in Malaysia, as the wildlife mainly live around the small stretch of river. However, sometimes they do wander off to nearby palm plantations to feed for some weeks and then wander back to Kinabatangan River again. With wild animals, nothing is guaranteed - which is a little part of the magic too!
What should I pack?
Binoculars
Bug repellent
Camera
Hat
Leech socks or long thick socks
Raincoat
Sunscreen
Torch light
