BEES – Burm and Emily’s Elephant Sanctuary is a special place where elephants can be elephants. It serves as a safe and natural home for rescued elephants, allowing them to retire and live out their days in a peaceful environment free from exploitation and abuse. At BEES, elephants are able to forage, dust bath, roam, explore, and socialize just as nature intended. The sanctuary also extends its care to cats and dogs in need and conducts outreach programs within the local community. During this week long experience, visitors will be able to have meaningful engagement in community initiatives and contribute to the well-being of both animals and villagers. It will allow participants to bring more impact from their stay than a shorter visit. What to ExpectDay 1: Get involved in activities to help elephants and, if desired, participate in local sightseeing and community engagements.Day 2: Enjoy a full day nature hike followed by relaxation activities.Day 3: Continue to assist with elephant care and sanctuary activities.Day 4: Engage in community activities such as teaching English, tree planting, sightseeing, and a local cooking class.Day 5: Experience the sanctuary's elephant activities, along with scenic drives and visits to local attractions.Day 6: Embark on an observation walk through the forest, followed by leisure time.Day 7: Say farewell to the Thai countryside and journey back to Chiang Mai.During the experience, participants will be provided with transportation, meals, and necessary boots for jungle trekking. Founded in 2011 by Burm Pornchai Rinkaew and Emily Rose McWilliam, BEES is an acclaimed elephant sanctuary listed on the World Animal Protection Organization's Elephant Friendly Guide. Pioneering a hands-off policy, they prioritize elephant well-being and established the BEES Elephant Foundation in 2015. Emily's commitment began in 2009 after witnessing the mistreatment of elephants in Thai tourist camps. In 2010, discussions turned into action, with Emily and her partner Burm relocating to Mae Chaem to start BEES. Burm, with a background in tourism, contributes his expertise to the project, aiming to uplift the community by teaching English. Since 2011, BEES has been a community-driven initiative, with Burm and Emily purchasing land and involving the local village in constructing accommodations. In addition to caring for elephants, BEES focuses on environmental conservation, having planted around 10,000 trees since 2012 with the help of visitors and local kids. Together, Burm and Emily's dedication creates a sanctuary that not only protects elephants but also fosters community and environmental well-being.
