This is one of my favourite trips ever!! Sumba is truly so beautiful - a balance of blue and green scenery, with waterfalls, hills, and gorgeous lagoons. There was almost no other tourists around when we were there, which was a huge plus for me. The locals were also genuinely friendly, which really warmed my heart. We visited East and West Sumba with this Seek Sophie Itinerary, and I loved both. The East truly shined with the Palindi Piarakuku Hills. Perfect weather (even though we went during rainy season) with vast landscapes unlike anything else we saw. The best part? We had the entire place to ourselves! However, the spots in the East were quite far apart, and the winding roads made the road trip nauseous for me because I get motion sick very easily. Weekuri Lagoon was the highlight on the West side. We practically had this stunning lagoon paradise all to ourselves. The photo opps were endless. Special shoutout to our amazing guides Son and Ino! Son deserves special praise for his cultural insights. He'd prepare us for each village visit, explaining proper etiquette (like politely browsing offered items or acknowledging photo requests from children). He also customised our itinerary based on our love for photography, suggesting the best times to visit locations for the best lighting conditions/suggesting the best angles. He even offered the front passenger seat for me when I was feeling pukey, which I really appreciated! Tips: Go during dry season (May-Sep) because the rainy season weather wasn't always cooperative when we went in April. Be sure to bring extras like umbrellas, portable fans, and sunscreen – the sun is no joke!

I've always wanted to visit Sumba ever since I knew it was so remote and beautiful, and I'm so glad that I finally got it. It was such an amazing and special trip to one of the most beautiful places in Indonesia! The highlight was definitely our incredible guide, Son. He was incredibly patient and flexible, giving us more time to explore the places that we really loved. He even adjusted the itinerary on the go, based on our preferences and the weather. He also had some hidden gems, like finding a secluded lagoon when we didn't feel like going to the beach. The lagoon itself was absolutely breathtaking! We had the whole place to ourselves, with water so blue it seemed unreal. The food throughout the trip was delicious, but more importantly, clean and safe. Staying hydrated was a breeze thanks to the constant supply of water in the car. Safety was always a priority, and Son did an amazing job keeping us feeling secure. But what truly made this road trip special was getting to know Sumba's culture and traditions deeper. We weren't just following a tourist trail; we visited local communities and gained a deeper understanding of their ancient culture. It wasn't just about snapping photos, but about genuinely connecting and bringing back a piece of their story with us.

The highlight of the trip was definitely the Lagoon. We went swimming, jumped in, and could walk around the boardwalk to get a bird's eye view of the lagoon and see where it meets the sea. Lots of great photo opps too! It's the kind of place I could have easily spent the entire day exploring (assuming it stays uncrowded!). I also appreciated having Son, our guide, who has good photography skills, as he was able to capture those perfect shots for us. There were some requests for money in the villages in the West, which made me a bit uncomfortable, but it's because the locals there are more used to seeing tourists. The villages in the East are a lot more authentic, and I much preferred that. Also, be prepared for humidity at certain spots – an umbrella is a lifesaver! Ultimately, though, the trip is all about who you travel with. Bring the best group of friends and Sumba is easily a perfect 10/10 experience!

This Sumba adventure was an unforgettable experience. Son stands out as the best tour guide I've ever had on any trip. His passion and knowledge of the island, its culture, and traditions were unmatched. He could explain anything in depth, from the history of a landmark to the intricacies of the Sumbanese custom. Safety and well-being were always a priority, with Son constantly checking in on us. But what truly impressed me was his ability to adapt the itinerary to our interests. We loved everything we saw, from the breathtaking natural beauty to the rich cultural experiences. The sunsets over the rolling hills were simply magical. The scenic drives themselves were an adventure, winding through green plateaus and offering breathtaking vistas. Having a guide like Son who was great at taking photos was a bonus – he knew exactly where to position us for the most stunning shots. The food throughout the trip was delicious, and the interactions with locals were truly special. We weren't just passing through villages; we were making connections, even being invited into one of the local homes to learn firsthand about their customs and culture.
